all the Goverment holidays extending during the period of

every year to more or less 12 days, and in addition thereto as

a rule, are exempted from duty every Saturday afternoon and the

whole of every Sunday in the year, whereas the holidays allowed

to Your Petitioners are only the following half day on every

Saturday and whole day on every alternati alternate Sunday, one day at Christmas time, half day on New

Year's day, one day in the Chinese New Year, one day at Easter,

half day on Whit Monday, half day on Empire day, half day on the

first Monday of Agust and no more.

6

The cost of living in this Colony generally has

during the last six years increased by more than 30%.

7.

According to the present arrangements, accommoda-

tion is provided for only two of Your Petitioners, the Warders,

according to seniority, in case they shall marry, and if no

quarters be avilable an allowance ofpnly $15 a month is made to

Your Petitioners, the Warders, whose salaries are paid in local

currency, which sum,

Your Petitioners, such Warders, consider

inadequate, it being intended to cover house rent and the coat

of light fuel and servants, privileges which Your Petitioners,

the Warders, now already enjoy, and in case of Your Petitioners,

the Warders, whose salaries are on the sterling basis, no

allowance whatever is made for quarters in case of marriage.

8.

The general quarters now occupied by Your

Petitioners, the Warders, who are unmarried, are in the opinion

of such Warders, uncomfortable, the same having no fire-places,

the bedding supplied being old and of inferior quality and the

lighting thereof being insufficient.

Your Petitioners, the Principal Warders, humbly

pray that, having regard to the circumstances

above stated in so far as the same affect them,

Your Excellency may be pleased to recommend in

favour of Your Petitioners, the Principal Warders?

(1). The appointment of at least one more

Principal Warder..

(2). Shorter hours of duty.
